Our solution to complementing portland cement
Cement and concrete are one of the most widely used man-made materials globally, second only to water in terms of consumption. Cement, which is the primary ingredient in concrete, has played a significant role in shaping our built environment. However, it is important to acknowledge that cement production contributes significantly to carbon emissions. According to the think tank Chatham House, cement production accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions.
To address this issue, GP-CEM has developed an innovative solution—a zero percent Portland cement that is made from byproducts of power stations. Specifically, they utilise ash produced during the process of burning fuel to generate electricity. This ash is typically disposed of in landfills as contaminated waste. Furthermore, GP-CEM is not solely reliant on fly ash; and have already begun incorporating a portfolio of additional waste and supply streams. Meaning we don’t have to be reliant on one waste stream.
By leveraging these waste materials, GP-CEM has developed geopolymers—a type of cement with an impressive carbon footprint reduction. Geopolymers have demonstrated exceptional durability, heat resistance, and acid resistance, making them one of the most durable materials on the planet. Moreover, over its lifetime, this type of concrete can be considered carbon negative and cost-effective due to its extended durability and longevity.
By utilising waste materials and reducing the carbon footprint associated with concrete production, GP-CEM’s innovative approach presents a promising solution to address the environmental impact of traditional cement manufacturing.
