This was a relatively small but detailed enabling project with a two-week deadline, ultimately completed ahead of schedule in just one week. The scope involved preparation and safe handling of generators to enable crane lifting operations. The team consisted of an experienced machine driver, a banksman, a fitter, and a 20-tonne excavator.
The first stage involved constructing a temporary ramp using imported soil and hardcore, providing stable access for plant and equipment. External shutters were then cut and safely removed using the excavator with shear attachment. The fitter carried out full disconnection of the generators in accordance with electrical isolation procedures, ensuring all safety protocols were observed.
Once isolated, the generators were relocated using skates, chains, shackles, and lifting slings to manoeuvre them into a safe position for the crane lift. Throughout the process, the banksman maintained control of movements and ensured safe working distances were observed at all times.
The enabling works were completed safely and a full week ahead of programme. The preparation ensured that the generators were ready for the crane lift without delay, allowing subsequent works to proceed smoothly. The client praised the efficiency and professionalism of the team in completing a complex, high-risk task within a tight timeframe.
