Moling/Directional Drilling

Directional Drilling Services by Atlas Gas

Our Services

What does it involve?

Directional drilling is a trenchless method for installing new pipes and cables without the need for long open trenches. Atlas Gas uses compact fluid assisted directional drilling equipment to guide new services accurately underground, keeping surface disruption to an absolute minimum.
Whether you require a new utility connection, the renewal of an existing line or a short crossing beneath an obstruction, our directional drilling service provides a clean and controlled installation with far less mess and downtime than traditional excavation methods.

What is Directional Drilling?

Directional drilling, often referred to as horizontal directional drilling, is a technique used to install pipes and ducts along a carefully planned underground route. A small launch pit is excavated, a guided pilot bore is drilled along the required alignment, and the new pipe is then pulled back through the bore into position.

Modern compact directional drilling rigs are ideal for property connections and small diameter utility services such as gas, water, electricity, fibre broadband and sewage pressure lines. The system allows the bore to curve, change depth and navigate around existing buried services where required.

Our Trenchless Drilling Capability

Atlas Gas operates a compact and steerable directional drilling rig designed for use in restricted urban locations and environmentally sensitive areas. Our technology is suited to:

Because the equipment works from small pits, typically no larger than pavement or garden scale, excavation volumes are kept low. This speeds up reinstatement and allows work to be carried out where larger machinery would not be practical.

Our drilling process uses carefully controlled drilling fluids, including water, water polymer or bentonite mixes. These fluids support the bore, remove spoil and reduce friction during pipe installation, ensuring a smooth and stable result even in challenging ground conditions.

Typical Applications for Directional Drilling

Atlas Gas directional drilling services are well suited to:
Subject to ground conditions, short to medium length bores can be completed, including longitudinal runs of up to approximately 100 m for appropriate pipe sizes.

How Our Directional Drilling Process Works

1. Survey and planning

We assess the proposed route, identify existing buried services and review surface constraints. From this, we design the bore profile and select the most suitable equipment setup.

2. Launch and reception pits

Small pits are excavated at the start and finish points, or at intermediate locations if required. These are positioned to minimise impact and ensure safe operation.

3. Guided pilot bore

The drilling rig creates a steerable pilot bore along the planned route. A locating system tracks the drill head position and depth, allowing constant adjustment to maintain accuracy and avoid existing utilities.

4. Bore enlargement

Where larger pipe diameters are required, reaming tools are used to enlarge the pilot bore. Drilling fluid is circulated to remove spoil and stabilise the bore.

5. Pipe installation

The new pipe, duct or protective sleeve is connected to the drill string and drawn smoothly back through the bore into its final position.

6. Connection and reinstatement

Once installed, the service is connected, tested and commissioned. All pits are reinstated to a high standard, leaving the surface clean and tidy.
